Alec & The Indians


Back along, my mother used to be the newsletter writer for Joyce Illingworth, a Christian who spent a decade as a Missionary in Northern Argentina. Before I left for this adventure, over a tasty Sunday roast, Joyce helped shape my route and threw a 'fun' Salta contact in my way, named Alec. Today I met this man, and we're off North to the jungle to meet indigenous Indians...

Alec rolls up outside Formia's in an impressively battered elderly white estate, boot tied shut with elastic rope. First impressions are that he's got the 'eccentric-jungle-explorer' look nailed. Karky lapelled, long-sleeved shirt, struggling to contain a mat of ginger chest hair, matching chinos and sandals over socks. His glasses bounce round his neck on a string, a tired-looking bum-bag clips round his trim middle next to a belt-clipped phone. His unkempt, grey-flecked ginger beard and cheery freckled face, topped with a red cricket hat, frame bright and slightly mischievous blue eyes. He speaks English with an accent very difficult to place and is hard to age due to his youthful spirit, but I'd guess he's got the half centenary.

First port of call was the workshop to grab a few bits before the long drive North. Alec disappears off into a cluttered, wood-scented chaos of boxes and benches and I'm left in a disorganised office full of DHL boxes with a guy counting dried animal skins. We jump back in the car, or 'the slave' as he calls it, and set off. His car is ace; it has an almost totally cracked windscreen, with drill holes to stop the cracks spreading, and anything that can rattles. The slave seems to have automotive cancer and its various parts are packing in, including the speedo, milo (which died at 297,000km) and fifth gear (which is 'dangerous'). Plus it seems the right indicator is always on.

As soon as we join the motorway we're stopped by a bunch of people dragging branches across the carriageways, banging drums and chanting. Much to Alec's annoyance, we got caught in a teachers strike. They're protesting nation-wide for 60% more pay, but they're especially pissed off today because yesterday a teacher died after getting clocked in the back of the head by a gun launched smoke grenade, fanning their cause. Looks like we're here for a while. Alec recognises a friend and got out to chat. I went a shot off a few photos; early morning mist swirling round the green mountains, teachers shouting in bull horns, banner carriers.

Thirty minutes later we're rattling along again and I find him very open about his fascinating life. Of mixed genealogy, he had an Irish mother, English father and granddad that sold planes round South America for Vickers during the roaring 20s. With his 6 siblings he spent 6 months on a farm South of BA and 6 in London. After a spendy private education, later focusing on agriculture, he chose a different course to his fathers ideals and joined the South American Missionary Society, evangelising to the native indigenous collective. Thrown in the deep-end at 25 he seemed to have a hard time maintaining a marriage, kids and all the responsibility of SAMS.

Not far up the road something snaps and twangs under the slave's hood and the steering gets real sluggish. Pulling into a town a mechanic finds a belt joining a whole host of different parts of the engine to have disappeared, and that the power steering's died. Nowhere in town has a suitable belt. Oh well. Alec points out a stowaway on the roofrack, a dead unlucky sparrow, and laughs 'A snack for later!' before jumping back in. We clatter on. I like his style.

I'm not 100% on the chronology, but he and Joyce stuck out the Falklands conflict and through the Argentinean financial crash, and one thing led to another and he decided to get out of SAMS and set up shop as a freelance craft trader, buying and selling native Indian craftwork. A definite ideas man, scattily bouncing excitably from one good meaning idea to the next, he's built an international export business selling what appears to be fairly traded native craftwork.

"One day," he says "my wife went on holiday and never came back..." What followed was a messy divorce and a still ongoing painful lawsuit. It seems she got the kids and the moolah, and is squeezing him for more. The picture he paints of her does make her out to have horns and carry a trident. Though like Borat "...it's ok, I have a new wife." This time he married a Psychologist; an unconsciously practical choice considering it sounded like he needed the therapy. His current openness and introspection sounds like a man who's been walked down a psychiatric path.

We pull up by a set of traffic lights and a man wanders between cars selling 'The Tribune' newspaper and a selection of catapults. I'm more than tempted to get a catapult, but we settle on a paper. Then Alec makes an impressive, if rather dangerous, attempt to multitask and read the paper while driving. Though even when not reading the paper he drove with no hands rather more than I'd have liked.

Passing endless fields of sugarcane we philosophise, talk psychology, agriculture, religion, economics, property, history, politics, about the Wicki people, and about Alec's theory on why Argentina never really managed to launch itself as a country. We suddenly have to pull in again, cos this time the coathanger that's holding down the bonnet has come loose and it's starting to flap. Might not be good if it flips up at 80mph.

We stop for lunch at Embarcation and I grab a seat while he gets change from a bank. He joins me and orders a corn dish I've never tried, so I give it a bash. Turns out he's pretty much a veggie, not entirely by choice, but cos hepatitis shagged his liver. The half hectare of fluorescent yellow corn cake, drowning under cheese sauce, was passably bland but could've fed a village.

We pick up a nurse and two teachers, hitching a few km down the road to their respective workplaces. Apparently it's normal practice to pick up uniformed professionals and give them free rides. Perhaps I should get a nurses uniform, then I'd get free lifts everywhere! Perhaps...

After Embarcation it's off the main roads and onto the old tierra. Everything that rattled before throws an epi. We pass miles of Soya plantations that Alec says were once forest. It's gradually being eaten up by a disastrous combination of illegal logging and agriculture. The Wicki people, still hunter gatherers, and the environment are the only losers.

Passing homes of 'Log thieves' who Alec's caught but can't stop, and real live mounted gauchos, in hats and chaps, we arrive at the 'protected' Wicki Mission area. I knew it wouldn't be so, but this modern day Mission couldn't have been further from the ornate stone mission reducciones of the Jesuits. Neither was it villages full of wigwams. Turns out it's just a pocket of real poor people living in mud 'adobe' houses behind stick fences. As we drive up, adults appear with bags full of handicrafts and children seem to appear and multiply from behind trees. Alec gets out and dons the bestringed glasses which don't sit straight on his face. He obviously puts in orders and collects them next time, and has a mark-up he calculates on an archaic data organiser.

Another thing I'd expected was traditional indigenous fashions, like the Bolivian and Peruvian Indians. But the Wicki people simply wear standard western clothing. Men in trousers and t-shirts, women in flowery dresses, baby strapped on with a sash and flip-flops. Though the women do seem to follow a 'the more materials, colours and patterns clash, the better' policy.

The Wicki have heavy-set Marlon Brando Godfather cheeks, and definitely have a more indigenous look than the neighbouring Argentineans of Spanish decent. They are very mild mannered, always shake your hand and are notoriously bad at making decisions. They follow a 'goodwill' merit system, where they do you a favour in exchange for an owed favour anon. This fit very well with Christian Missionary ethics, but was and still is exploited by entrepreneurial Argentineans who've no intention of returning favours.

We shuffled from village to village as the Wicki came out to sell Alec their stuff. Still fully involved with the wellbeing of the Missions Alec organises Wicki Footy championships and marathons and is endlessly fundraising for Church roofs, the building of a Museum and other Wicki related projects. As well as helping Alec tie up and bag giant bunches of necklaces, I pretty much photodocumented the day, to the entertainment of the kids. We left a box or two of instant mash and candy bars at each village. Some kids had ginger highlights as a consequence of malnutrition. I was asked by a lady if I'd photograph her family because her mother was dying, so Alec drove on & I obliged.

We met up in the main town where Alec had parked up. We unloaded our stuff and set up our mozzy nets in our mud hut. While the threat of Malaria is low there's been a resurfacing of Dengue Fever of late and while you don't die (first time you get it...) it gives you a bitchin headache. Our 'bathroom' has a brownstained bathtub and a cupboard with large spider legs protruding from one side. In the 'kitchen' our fridge is open and contains two black kettles, a packet of medication and a lonely tub of marmite. The 'lounge' has a fine selection of National Geographics circa 1993.

While Alec sets to work, paying for carvings, paintings and jewellery from a never ending queue of locals, I set off to explore the village. Cut to ten minutes later and I'm surrounded by kids messing about for the camera then swarming round to see the picture on my LCD. Children appear from nowhere. It's no surprise that every girl over 20 years old here has a baby in tow.

When I ask Alec for some water I'm supplied orange Fanta. Fortunately I love Fanta, but this might explain why the place looks like it's crying out for a good dentist. Even the kids teeth look like wooden stumps.

Alec organises a village meeting to sort the upcoming footie tournament and we leave them to it while we eat a beefy dinner washed down with more Fanta. I learn the best way to hunt a condor and after a long day we hit the hay...

Up and pottering about at 0645 in the spitting with rain, we rearrange the already loaded Slave and pack in five Wicki for the bumpy journey back. We pass eagles and herons out looking for breakfast and philosophise our way back to Salta, taking the road Sandra and I should've taken instead of the Jungle Road. As I ponder what splendid luck to see this crazy backwater we see an ambulance mow down a chicken. Sad and morbid it's true, but what delicious irony to cark it being hit by an ambulance.

Salta v (Passing Pumamarca)


After the bender of a pass from the Salt Plains we wind our way down to Pumamarca, originally an Inca settlement built at the foot of the striking 'Mountain of Seven Colours'. At a quaint market I buy a few alpaca scarves and steal a few sneaky photos. Sandra buys most of the market and we grab a llama steak for brunch. Surprisingly enough it doesn't taste of chicken! More porky beefy, with a hint of tuna steak. Not much to write home about, but evidently enough to blog.

Some emergency pollo empenadas in a bag and we're back on't road heading up the famous Quebrada de Humahuaka, a world heritage site. We're on route to a colonial town and a pre-Columbian (well old) indigenous fort, both real close to tut t'Bolivian Border.

The reconstructed fort on a hill is my first taste of the South American ancients stonemasonry. They knew what they were doing then. A fascinating windy stone town surrounding a temple with amazing valley views and comedy phallic cacti. It's ace seeing the way these pre-Inca guys built clever cities while we were busy throwing spears at each other.

Back on the road in the heading North to Humahuaka, we crossed the Tropic of Capricorn and passed a fair few dogs by the roadside. The dogs here have an over zealous penchant for car chasing. In fact the dogs in South America have a funny life. Domesticated by man, but left as unspayed strays to jump anything they want they have bred like rabbits. Some towns have more dogs than peeps, in a full spectrum of emanciation. They seem to be largely ignored by the populace, are don't seem quite sure what to do with their new found wild urban status. They skip about in packs merrily looking for piss to sniff, weedy dogs to bully and bitches to do, generally in front of a large crowd on a bus station forecourt.

Humahuaka: good name, average place. Another pretty colonial one-story town with various ornate churches, markets selling silly hats and shops packed with overpriced Bolivian-made ponchos, guanaco socks and the usual tourbus fodder. After a coffee and a silly hat purchase we head back down the Quebrada de Humuaka towards Salta, through fantastic colourful cacti valleys as the sun softly set.

6pm, heading through Jujuy, the next big town north of Salta, and out the other side. On a busy motorway junction we pass a marvellous sign saying 'Salta Left, Salta Straight on'. Arbitrarily we hike a left and several km later realise we chose poorly. Back we go and navigate the least straightforward junction to finally end up on the direct road to Salta. Or so it looked on our map. A nice short straight red line, Jujuy to Salta.

High up in the jungle canopy on a painfully slow narrow switchback road hugging a mountain that wasn't on our map. Damn the free car rental mappage. Possibly the meatiest spider I've ever seen padded across the road and I almost had to swerve round it. Bats fluttered by and the jungle played it's jungle cacophony at full volume.

Sporadic signs said Salta 61km, and twenty minutes later, 59km. The petrol gauge began sinking through the red and became a taboo subject of conversation. We'd survived thus far without changing a tyre but became mindful of the advice we hadn't heeded: take a spare, two if you can and a spare tank of gas. All we had was 8 litres of agua and some warm white wine.

Trucks fly round tight bends with lights full beam and the unlit road seems to stretch on forever. Once we rounded a bend after a truck, flipped the lights back up to full and out of nowhere appeared a head of 25 horned cows. Quite the surprise.

The sweet sweet streetlights of Salta eventually envelope us and after what I'd driven through I took us back through the mental traffic of Salta without a hitch. Apart from a long drive down a one way road. We made it back in one piece with an unscathed, albeit very dirty cowboy. Good work fella.

Knacked and pretty much overwhelmed with the natural beauty of the Salta region, I fell into a deep and contented sleep, in Granny Formia's flowery bed.

Salta iv (Route through the clouds)


For years, the 'tren a las nubes' ('train in the clouds') cut it's way across steep Andean valleys, tunnels and countless iron bridges. An engineering marvel, the line includes 21 tunnels, 13 viaducts, 31 bridges, 2 loops and 2 zig-zags. Starting at 1200m and rising to 4220m along the Quebrada del Torro, the railway was originally built to connect Argentina and Chile. It later became a tourist train, then two years ago the train broke down on a bridge and it hasn't run since. Also running up the valley, along-side or opposite the railway line is a rough dirt road and we're gonna take the cowboy up it...

The start of the nubes route puts the V in valley. Under a grey sky we begin to climb up the giant cacti ridden Andean hills, banks of wispy cloud massaging the tips. A small root-like river winds a down wide stony bed, clearly fuller in wetter seasons. We pass tiny tiled villages, rusty iron girder bridges and carpets of trees and cacti. Rail and road intertwine. Wild horses dot the vista. Mountains display colourful scars of up to seven clearly distinguishable colours.

This ancient and largely untouched landscape would make a perfect setpiece for the 'Walking With Dinosaurs' tv series.

Random police checkpoint. Stop the record. "Your papers and international driving license." I hand him the papers and my distinctly non-international card, saying "...my INTERNATIONAL license...". An old Jedi-mind trick I know. He scans through disinterestedly, more focussed on the fact that our car has no licence plates. "This isn't the car you're looking for. You can go about your business. Move along..." We're waved along. Barn Obi Wan on the case. Close call. These bored border dudes love looking for loopholes to exploit.

Driving along round ever changing bends, the altitude starts to get to me and I start to think I'm Michael Knight, Lone Crusader. In Cowboy Kitt, I hum the theme. Sandra throws concerned sideways glances. Fortunately before I try to jump the canyon with the turbo boost San Antonio de los Cobres appears in view. As also did the Salinas Grande salt plains, glittering briefly on the horizon.

A strange and hopeless place, San Antonio used to rely on the Tren a las Nubes for income. A reasonably large town, containing 7000 isolated inhabitants on the desert Altiplano, it's become a bit of a ghost town. Even before you arrive, snotty, unwashed children of consistently poor dental hygiene literally run AT the car in a manic bid to push stuffed llamas or fancy stones on you. One immediately feels party in a horror film and lock the doors and speed up, flicking on the wipers in case you take down a kid. In town, one story high, everything's shuttered or flapping in the wind. An empty restaurant with a softly spoken, sad waiter serves us empenadas (which are the only thing on the menu and albeit tasty are still cold in the middle).

Post sustenance we step into the arid open. It's like a wild west frontier town, minus the tumbleweed. Locals immediately spot a white face and run up with just slightly more alpaca fur garmentage than they can carry. Scrambling back into the car we scream out of town on a mission for the Salinas Grande salt plains. What this town needs is a) the Tren a las Nubes to get rolling again and b) a quality dentist.

60km and a long time later we're still rumbling over a seemingly endless expanse of sandy stones, trying to avoid that trip destroying double-puncture. Either side is a brush plain sporadically pocked with backlit llamas and donkeys with fetching decorative earrings. The folk round these parts are certainly more indigenous looking. Far away are standing like silently sentinels are the dusty blue Andes.

The sun dips significantly in the sky and dust tornadoes spiral off with a sense of foreboding. We start to question our route taking. Have we taken a wrong turn? We'd been on the road that takes about two hours for a good three hours now, and not a sign or salt plain in sight. Driving past a hill we take the opportunity to climb up for an elevated vantage. At altitude this hill resembles a small mountain but from the top we spot the salt plains off ahead, stretching out like a brilliant white lake towards the distant mountains. Back down the hill the setting sun has set the Cowboy in shadow. Just round the next corner there's a sign saying Salinas Grandes and Pumamarca, our planned destination. Typical. Glad we climbed that hill.

The sun eventually falls gracefully from the sky casting the thin altostratus a brilliant orange and we're still trundling over stony desert roads. We start to re-evaluate. We're 60km away from Pumamarca and haven't yet reached the salt plains. We could sleep in the car. We've got an apple, a yoghurt drink, a stale roll, a tomato, 8 litres of still water and a warmish bottle of Cafayatten Torrentes. It's doable.

But it'd help to get a bite somewhere nearby mind. So when we finally reach the cross roads (Pumamarca and darkness right; random twinkling lights and dirt road ahead; salt plains, asphalt and random twinkling lights left) we hiked a left. Pulling into a tiny solitary garage off the road we find two men drinking mate tea in the dark. Sandra has a word while I keep the engine running. She returns and informs me that we need to ask for Veronica in that twinkling patch, and she should be able to fix us a sandwich. Bonza.

After a technically complicated photo of our headlights lighting the salt patterns under a star filled sky we eventually take a right down to find Veronica. Down a sand road we knock on a random door and get passed via two more doors, before ending up being shuffled into an empty room bar a table, tablecloth and chairs. Moments earlier the room was full of teenagers making lots of noise, but they're now in the next room and are joining the kids who peer round the corner and run off laughing. Chicos, this place definitely isn't in the Lonely Planet.

Veronica turns out to be a man and he has no bread for a sarnie. But he does have milanesa steak and mash and can fix us a big bottle of Fanta. We sit there enjoying a better than average meal and pop and Veronica charges us a whole 4 pesos (80p) for the trouble. As he describes how tranquil it is here and how we can sleep in our car in the village, a teenager rocks up and asks if we wanna stay in a room in town. So he walks us over and shows us a bare room with two beds, power and a shared family shower. Done. We grab the cowboy, the newest car in town by a good decade (and now covered in finger artwork), park up outside and unload.

Out in the back end of nowhere, with only ten dull streetlights to light the night every star beams it's little heart out. The whole cosmos is on display, including the milky way. Clear as a bell, a dense strip of stars spanning the night, with Orien, Cassiopeia and the Southern Cross standing distinct. A shooting star whizzes past in my periphery, too fast to properly catch, and I feel it kind of pointless to make a wish in light of what just happened. I just nod my thanks. I set up the tripod and blitz off a few reasonably successful snaps of the night sky before retiring to bed.

The following morning we rise early with lots ahead of us. Our host family, all busy in the kitchen preparing a tablefull of empenadas, see us off and leave it up to us how much cash to leave. Outside we realise this is a fully adobe town, called 'San Tuareo Tres Posos' (The sacred three wells), is literally on the salt plains. We briefly wander around and watch farmers chase uncooperative llamas and children head to school. Mud bricks dry in piles under the sun. Everyone bids us farewell as we drive off and rejoin the main road.

Heading back towards Pumamarca, we decide to take a drive on the salt plain. Stretching off in both directions, with the sun rising to the left, we take a right. Thankfully solid, the salt plains are crystallised into a blazing white sea of hexagonal geometric patterns. Apart from the odd silhouette motorbike or articulated lorry tearing down the raised tarmac a km away, we had the vast lake to ourselves. Photo op heaven.

In places it's farmed and piled in neat mounts ready for cleaning. I even gave the ground a cheeky lick, and it does what it says on the tin. Damn salty.

Finally able to tear ourselves away from the spellbinding and borderline hallucinogenic salt plains, we jump back on the road to Pumamarca. It turns out it's 60km of 4000m cactai pass, riddled with cliff-faced, break-smoking switchback turns. Good job we didn't take that right last night... Tis funny indeed how things work out.

Salta iii (el pasaje de la tierra la buena vista)


Up and away by 8am, we watch the sun rise over dusty vineyards, casting the dominating Andean spine a pastel pink. Packs of wild dogs strut around joined to long shadows, looking for grub, a ruck or some nookie. Today we're driving Northwest to the catchily named 'Cachi', via the Cactus national park. If all goes to plan we'll back at grandma's in Salta, in time for dinner.

Argentina's Highway 40 runs a good 5000km from La Quiaca on the Northern border with Bolivia all the way to Ushuia on the Southern tip. The full run makes a popular road trip for motorcyclists. However, a mere 2km outside Cafayatte, the nice smooth asphalt stops. On the sketchy map that came with the car the line's gone from red to green. That means it's 'el pasaje de la tierra' (dirt roads) from here all the way back to Salta. Personally, I'd have coloured them the other way around.

Roads are littered with stones of varying sizes, and driving demands a new level of concentration so as not to puncture tyres on naughty sharp rocks. Occasionally, while rounding a large rock, it can suddenly turn into a startled rodent and dash off the road.

Open-backed trucks storm past, filled with grapes, winepickers or both, kicking up a huge cloud of dust that finds its way through our open windows and temporarily blind us. Tiny adobe (mud house) pueblos dot the roads, some even with Romanesque mud pillars and arches. Isolated brown houses in a brown landscape, sometimes with a couple drinking morning coffee outside by a brightly coloured washing line. These folk must scratch a minimal living off this empty dry land. All they have in abundance is space.

We stop at a parada for a quick coffee. We are the only guests , sat under one of the two outdoor parasol covered tables. The toothless lady running the show seems to spend her days sweeping dust out of her café and watering the barren sandy dirt outside, to the tango music she cranks up inside.

Several wild grazing donkeys and a rogue llama later we start making our way through a bizarre lunar landscape. The kind of place you'd expect the early series of Star Trek to film Jim Kirk and his boys beaming down to some 'strange new world' (where the new guy without a laser gun is guaranteed to get dead by some angry 'alien' whom more than resembles a man in a rubber suit).

Chalky white and deep red rocks jut from the ground at mad angles, sitting like the giant arrow feathers. We twist and turn through windswept trails stopping for pictures every time the view goes mental. Once we stopped to spy a crazy view and stumble across a huge expanse of long thin red peppers (pimentos), packed together drying under the sun, probably destined to become paprika.

After the lunar bit the valley opens out, going all barren rolling plains of the American mid-west. Half an hour later we're edging the cactus national park we pass endless giant wild-west style cacti (some almost 5m high). Apart from lonely soaring birds, small emanciated foxes and the odd field of of horny cows and horses we don't see a great deal of fauna. We met a few vehicles, usually at speed on a blind bends, exchanging polite waves. More than once we passed jacked cars attaching the spare. The worry is what to do in the event of two punctures. Then you're screwed. It's a long way to anywhere and a long way from everywhere.

We take a late lunch of goat stew and bbq beef asado in the Cachi main plaza. A cute little place in the Valles Calchaquíes with a respectable 18th century church. It's Easter Sunday and a big weekend for these heavily Catholic cats. Though it seems the celebrations are tonight and the locals are currently plodding towards their respective siestas.

Pleasantly filled with goat, we hit a mountain pass over to the enchanted valley. Rising quickly over yellow-green plains that stretch off forever, we slip under the clouds and feel the temperature drop. At the passes peak, 3348m above sea level, we begin the windy descent through the enchanted valley. The views resemble those rolling emerald views you see of Ireland's west coast, but on steroids.

Driving from sea level to 3km up and back down again does strange things to the cavities of the bonse. Ears blocked, sinuses went a bit wrong and for a while I thought my brain had grown, cos it felt real tight. But no such luck. A hundred curves later, cut into giant green cloudy peaks, we pull in to see why the road is full of parked cars. Turns out we're up the hill from an Easter Rodeo. Down below we watch loads of gaucho nutters, in hats and chaps, riding horses that clearly don't want to be ridden. Mounting seemingly placid blindfolded horses, they remove the constraints and the wild horses go fully loco, helped along by a sound whipping by the gaucho. Some dudes stay on their madly bucking bronco for an impressive length of time, before an inevitable and painful looking fall. Others horses buck and charge the surrounding crowds, sending Argeys scattering. Most entertaining.

A retired yank couple who've been waiting hours for a bus (that probably won't come) ask if they can hitch back to Salta. We oblige and they slightly too talkatively lay down their life stories. Back in Salta they gratefully fill our depleted tank and I bravely navigate Saltas streets by night. Not hugely aware of how junctions work, it seems the bravest / fastest vehicle gets right of way. One wrong turn and a trip the wrong way down a long one-way and we're back at grandma Formia's digs, ready for quick meat and sleep.

What a quality day. When I finally get the photos up you'll see what I'm on about...

Salta ii (Getting to know the cowboy)


After grandma's 'breakfast' (bizarre seedy cactus fruit, dry mini pastries and a coffee that had only had a passing introduction to coffee beans) we jumped in the the Chevy and hit Salta rush hour. Destination Cafayatte, a days drive South of Salta. Wave to grandma Formia. Vroom vroom!

Red light. Window down. "Hola muchacho! Donde esta Cafayatte? ... De recho? Si? Bueno! Adios amigo..."

It quickly dawned on us that space around a vehicle and speed limits are foreign here. Lanes are also a flexible construct. Fortunately Sandra is the helm for the first shift. She's from Madrid and says they drive like this there. I'll give it a bash later eh? When it gets nice and easy in the countryside. There's nothing like me starting a road trip with a crash.

Outside Salta were rolling with the traffic, who all fragrantly ignore speed limits. Us cruising at 80kmph we're regularly overtaken as we pass 35kmph signs.

It's not long and were in the landscape we came to visit. Vast valleys of brown and green, wide empty riverbeds sprouting with lush foliage, dusty roads and terracotta earth. Windows down, a fresh breeze and baking sunshine. Passing scrub lands and fields of giant cacti, fully wild west style.

Chevy becomes 'The Cowboy' and the three of us pull in to a little pueblo (village) for a picnic. Cheese and salami sangas, fashioned with a Swiss Army knife, are consumed as we watch small children ride big bikes round the treecovered plaza, backed by a fantastic Jesuit style church. A real life gaucho trots by in chaps, buys a coke from the kiosco without dismounting and clops off.

After lunch, we pass through the Quebrada de Cafayatte, and the landscape shifts from open plains to high canyon-like gorges. Mineral-rich mountains spill colourful strata; red, green, blue, yellow and white. Distinctive red sandstone towers spike the vistas, a gleaming silver river winds its course and llamas dot the cactus-ridden landscape, chewing on grasses. We climb and drop endless passes, stopping in to join the tourbuses at 'the devil's throat', a massive box canyon gash in't mountain. It feels like we stop round every bend to grab another photo. This becomes a theme, but the cowboy is most obliging.

Eventually, 170km on the clock, we arrive in Cafayatte, find a cheap room full of bunks and walk to the nearest winery. Cafayatte is famous for it's Torrentes grape. A dry but fruit-driven number with a grapey winey flavour. It's five to six, and they're about to shut shop. A tour is nearing it's end, so we tag along just in time for the tasting.

After sunset we grab dinner in the busy square; a fine bottle of Torrentes, empenadas (mini Cornish pasties with various fillings), humitas (mashed corn with onions & cheese, steamed in a corn husk), tamales (similar to humitas, but with sundried steak) and locros soup (a beany cassulet style chorizo broth). Sitting outside we watch the local collective mill about and finally, full and knackered we hit the haystack.

Salta i (Easter Weekend)


After a stomp round a depressing zoo full of closely caged and genuinely sad looking animals and kids knocking on the dirty glass we boarded our bus to Salta. This time a proper good Carma one. But I'll spare the details as I've dropped the bus chat already. Lets just say after I asked the cabin dude in my best Spanish "Please may I have a white water?" I fully exploited the free wine and drifted off to sleep after watching the brilliant 'Butterfly effect'.

Pulling into Salta, in Northern Argentina, at 1300 hours, Easter Weekend, we packed up and stomped the km to the hostel I'd reserved online. I say packed up, but Sandra dragged her giant wheeled suitcase. She's playing this interesting business class slash backpacker card at the moment. Over various squares and beautiful churches, and up the stairs to the hostel.

The Israeli with a sizeable gut, Jewish ringlocks and a patchy beard who sat behind the desk said they've never heard of hostelz.com and don't take online reservations. And this is a bad weekend to not have a reservation. It turns out that Salta is the place to be at Easter. As well as the residents, it seems a good 500,000 peeps rock up to dress up and walk round the square in some big old religious procession.

Grand.

Fortunately he's very helpful ringing around to find us an alternative. Unfortunately everywhere's full. So I set out to tread the streets with a subordinate of Boss Israeli. An hour later, everywhere we asked was also full, not even the 5 star badboys had space. However, I'm a big believer that when folk say bad luck, everywhere's full, there's always something. Even if it's staying in some granny's house.

So when we returned unsuccessful it turned out Sandra had found a place from her 'Reise' German Guide book, staying in a local house. An impressively cheap taxi later were being welcomed into Casa Formia Camble. Formia herself, a sweet, shrunken grandma in comfy slacks and white Reeboks, warmly welcomes us with a kiss. She introduces us to her friend in the lounge and shows us the room: two singles, a massive Victorian en suite, fills us in on the internet and breakfast, & lets us know that it's 20 pesos each (cheaper than a dorm room at 4 bob a piece). Result.

As soon as we agree, she starts to clear her stuff out of the room & sets it fresh with new sheets. It turns out we're actually sleeping in Grandma's room! The drawers and cupboards are packed with her stuff, a neat pile of comfy trainers, and loads of photos of grandpa who is no longer. It's bizarre and sweet in equal measure. Furthermore, while a fair walk from the centro, it's a block away from the best eateries and bars! I love it when a plan comes together.

I have made touch with a contact in Salta who deals with indigenous Indians in a mission in north eastern Argentina. In 5 days he's offered to let me join him on a trip up. So between now and then Sandra and I decide to hire a car and explore the notoriously beautiful Salta region. We duck into town and really shop about. We're back in the Easter weekend problem. Half a million peeps looking for interesting ways to waste their wonga. Most car hire shops have shut shop, but find two options both new cars and go for a Renault Clio and have our man Hugo drop it round the following morning.

The following morning he rolls up with a Chevvy Corsa with no license plates. Ok, so no Clio then. It's spanking new, has only 3400k on the clock and has those super stupidly sensitive new car breaks. With a rough route in mind, a free brochure map of red and green lines on a white page, a passing discussion about liability, no showing of driving licenses were off! Wild and free, on Salta's streets where a space bubbles round cars don't exist.

The truth lies in the wine...


Wandering back from the bus depot where I sorted a pimping Carma bus up to Salta, I'm accosted by a gypsy. It's funny, there are a few of them and it seems Gypo fashion spans international boundaries. Unwashed plaited hair, clashing outfits of floral patterns, missing teeth, dirty babies pith pierced ears in mini gypsy outfits. I try to shake the toothless fella before he gets his spiel flowing, but he asks all the right questions to stop an Englishman, even in Spanish. "Good afternoon. Where are you from? Don't worry, no money no money. What is your name..." Bollocks he's holding my handshake. Gripped.

Before I know it he's crossed my palms with lucky rosemary (evidently short on heather here) and made me keep it for luck. I try to explain that lady luck is already on my case and that I am more than willing to return the herbs he then steps up close and straight asks for cash. "Did you not say no money? ... Oh it's not for you, of course". I try to leave and he's as hard to shake as I imagined he would be, but fortunately my hostel was ten steps away, and I slip in before he can cast a hex.

Safely inside it seems Sandra has arrived from Bariloche and her bus journey was less than fantastic. A decent bus, but stopping in every tiny pueblo all night long & with a skanky broken bog. The hand-written notice apparently read: "Use only in extreme emergency, to avoid colera".

There are cycling tours in Mendoza where you hire a bike and cycle to the furthest vineyard you can be bothered, sample as many different bodegas on the route back & drop the bike in if you make it back alive. Sounds borderline illegal, promoting being in charge of a vehicle under the influence. I put that on tomorrow's to do list. Instead, today we're all booked on an arvo wine tour, visiting two bodegas outside Mendoza, in the Maipu area.

Who'd name a place Maipu? They're begging for crap jokes. "I think I swallowed my padlock key, once I've been to the loo can you help me look for the key in Maipu?" or more simply "I've shat me pants. Wanna see Maipu?" I came up with more, but I'll spare you Maipu puns.

Anyhoos, on the tourbus with a friendly, informative and (most importantly) bilingual guide we learn all sorts of facts. Mendoza, with it's ideal climate, altitude and soil, produces 70% of Argey wine. 300 sunny days And 300mm of rainfall per year ease out the natural sugars from the small wine grapes. The only natural hindrance is the grapefruit sized hail in January, a month before harvest. Over a thousand wineries span the Greater Mendoza area, of which 350 are internationally famous (including Norton, San Filipe, Zuccardi etc, available in the UK).

1st stop: Baudron. A twenty year old uninterested girl in a "Every girl wants to be a princess" t-shirt gives us the tour in fast forward. The smell hanging inside reminded me of my father's cellar where he brewed wine from anything he could find into wine; elderflower bushes by the side of the road, rose petals, red currants, etc. From my memory, Don John's vino wasn't a massive success.

Perhaps it's the new world thing but this winery had no history, no soul. It was a factory, pumping grapes in at one end and bottles of plonk out the other. Tourists were treated similarly. A half-hearted spin round and we're tasting a two varieties and given the hard sell to buy a spendy vintage. I felt like Miles from 'Sideways' when he got the rage in a touristy vineyard. They need a graphic designer here too; fluorescent pink & blue labels with rainbow text? Doesn't quite spell class, daaarling. Though for the places aesthetic falls, the sweet Malbec (dulche) desert red was rather interesting.

2nd stop: Don Arturo, which by way of comparison was a small 6th generation family-run gig, naturally tending the grapes, on site, without artificial assistance and putting what felt like a lot more love into each bottle. One of the daughters informed us as she leisurely showed us round, that these wines are only available to buy at the bodega and via a limited import to the states. The quality is higher than saleable for the local market. We strolled through the vineyard and tasted Malbec, Cabernet Sauvignon and Syrah grapes off the vines. One interesting thing was how quickly an unoaked wine can be produced. It's literally: squeeze the grapes, add the yeast, when that's eaten up the natural sugar, you have wine. The oaking in fired French oak barrels for 24 months adds the vanilla roble finish, nice in my opinion on reds, but grim on whites.

Anyways, we got to try the young unoaked Malbec, Cab Sauv & Syrah and they were all most quaffable. The Malbec particularly: rich, thick and leggy (...the way I like my women). The Cab Sauv, with full on jammy overtones and deep black forest gateaux finish. The Syrah, packing a tannin kick and a nutty, earthy red berry body. Yep they definitely all tasted of red wine.

I love the wax lyrical wine bullshit.

But this winery was real proud of it's wine and that could be tasted, so I bought the best bottle available. A vintage roble Malbec from the year their daughter married. 80 pesos a pop, or the equivalent of 4 nights hostel accommodation. One for the wine cellar back home (read: IKEA rack precariously balanced on the microwave). In pounds it only amounts to £13, but it'd be worth a small fortune back home. Although it's boxed up, there's a reasonably high chance that before I get it home, I may end up doing an expensive tie-dye job on my clothes.

That night the five of us in our hostel who were on the tour (Nicole Sandra, a Kiwi & yank girl and an amusingly patriotic American "I LOVE my country!") drank our way through the cheaper bottles of Mendozan reds (and a 2 peso Malbec we didn't drink the night before, passable at the end of 4 decent bottles). We head out for steaky, winey dinner. The wine loosened our tongues and hearts. One thing led to another, piscos entered the equation, out went my memory, and I rolled in at 630am. Apparently I had a nice sleep in a bar somewhere.

It took me till 3pm the next day to get my tet back up and firing on all cylinders. At this point Sandra & I taxi to Chandon, the bubbly bodega, and took a very classy champagne tour. Before arriving our taxi driver, a scaled down version of the The Fellowship of the Ring Ogre with a 5 o'clock shadow, took us on an interesting tour of the petrol stations of Mendoza. Here when you fill up with petrol you're not allowed to be in the car, in case it blows up. Leaning on the car, however, is ok. You got to love the rules here.

Sadly the hire-a-bike-and-get-pissed trip never really materialised. But why ride a bike when you can have an ogre chauffeur you?

Getting High


My first day in Mendoza I spent wandering Mendoza's streets, uploading blogs, playing table tennis & sampling a new beer (Andes). Mendoza centro, with it's tree-lined, wide streets and café culture, is aiming for a Parisian vibe. Slightly wide of the mark, it's a big dirty city with open sewers and no bins. A bad combination. While you look for a bin to deposit your rubbish one can unwittingly end up in 2 ft down in a steam of poo. Other observations are that a) Mendoza seems also to have a large quantity of pregnant women, b) while there are many taxis about, it is virtually impossible to stop one and c) the food and unsurprisingly, wine here are great, in both quality and value.

That night, after much cheap plonk, I fell asleep, fully dressed - much to the amusement of Nicole and Lana, my dormies. At 3am, I undress & slip back to sleep. An hour or so later, light sleeping Lana is woken by me sleep talking (here we go again!). However, this time it's different. The following morning Lana explained to me: "You were sleeptalking last night. But it wasn't in English, or Spanish, it was a completely different language. It had full punctuation and grammar, and you spoke for a full minute, took a deep sigh and fell back to sleep. I don't know if you're religious, but I think you may have been posessed by the holy spirit! It's alm Sunday today! It sounded like tongues!" So there you are! A new sleep disturbance to go along with snoring, farting, sneezing; SLEEP POSESSION!! What range! What style.

Anyhoos, today Nicole and I took the 12 hour 'High Mountain Tour', which did exactly what it said on the tin, and took us up through the Andes & up a real high mountain. A grand and spectacular place, changing round every bend. Vast open valleys, skirted by gargantuan colourful, but bare, mountains, some snowcapped year round. They filmed 7 Years In Tibet here.

Initially annoyed cos the bus raced past some amazing viewpoints and pulled in with every other Mendozan tour bus at the crap spots.A view of a mountain with the sun straight in our face and an old bridge packed with tours. Can I get more tourists in my photo please?!

Further up the valley we stopped to tale in the highest mountain in all the Americas, Cerro Aconcagua, standing proud at 6900m. Then we took a left at the Chilean border, and climbed up endless sheer switchback curves for a quick snowball fight above the snowline. Atop the 4200m Cerro Christo stands a giant statue of 'Christ Redentor' with an Argey Flag one side and Chilean flag t'other, to symbolise the peaceful settlement of the border. The route up to the top isn't always open due to adverse weather. We struck it lucky, with crystal blue skies. Yesterday it was closed due to snow.

Racing back down the wet dirt tracks I was struck by a very real fear of death. The driver was clearly a mental, overtaking cars full of cautious tourists. The whole day he'd taken the racing line and only put his belt on as he came up to police check areas. But we made it down safe and sound and the man got a round of applause (more a "thank the lord you did not kill us", than a "what a skill driver you are").

The views up and down the valley more than made up for the earlier impotent viewpoints and limp english translation. Hanging out the window taking pix of the van and views a police check man pulled us in and asked me not to lean out of the window. I coudln't understand a word he said and though it was "Do you want to take a photo of me?" Fortunately I checked with Nicole before I took his picture. Two bends later I was hanging out again taking lovely photos of the van & views.

Our final stop was an Inca Spa at Punta del Inca, on the bend of the river where hot sulphuric springs bubbled into the river. The rest of the Inca town above had been wiped out by a big dirty avalance centuries ago, but the spar they built around the spring remained, under a natural bridge, stained a rusty orange and covered in wacky stalagmights. A makeshift market sold all sorts of lama related products, and I was more than tempted to buy a stiff white lama emblazened crochet cowboy hat (see photo when I finally get them up). At 3 quid it was more than tempting, but wisdom got the better of me & I restisted...

Bussed up


Half a day to kill, and with a bag of fresh croissants kindly donated by Martha, I walk like John Wayne after a sound buggering to the bus stop. That bike ride left me a mess. No more of this exercise gubbins for me. Today Marla's off to cycle 150km round seven lakes or some madness with a French dude that fancies her. Screw that. It's powered transport for me from here on in. Today it's buses and a chair lift up a mountain for panoramic vistas of Bariloche.

The views from the Cerro Campanario were simply splendid. You can see why this is called the lake district. Major and minor lakes aplenty, mighty snowy mountains sprouting right from the shores, the route we cycled yesterday past that fancy hotel, all clear as a bell. I blitz off a few digital rolls hoping to stitch a few panoramic at home anon, and thoroughly content I wander back for my bus..

Now then - Argey buses! As I mentioned, buses here are like an airline service with four classes; Coach, Semi-Carma, Carma and Premiere Executivo. Normally you'll have two classes on each bus, eg. Semi-Carma upstairs and Premiere down.

I arrived with about 3 minutes to spare, find the Andesmar to Mendoza and weigh up the size of the queue; plenty of time to get a take away cheese & ham sarnie from the restaurant. I join the bag queue and spot Swiss Nicole, my translator, and we shuffle to the front. This is my 1st official long bus journey under an Argentinean operator (In comparison, Chilean, Brazilian & Paraguayan don't cut the mustard).

At the front of the queue a man tickets my bag hands me the stub, shoves it into the back and straight demands a tip. Hmm. I'm overcome by the same feeling you get at an American bar where a bartender expects a tip for opening a bottletop. That's not tipworthy, that's basic rock-bottom service. Mr bag thrower stamps his feet a bit, but I stand my ground and board the bus. As I find my seat I wonder if I'm missing some basic etiquette here, but end up thinking he must try it on with all the tourists. However, three things could happen from here:

I) We arrive in Mendoza and I get my bag
II) The spiteful bagman 'accidentally' leaves my pack on the Bariloche platform
III) Mr Thrower man discretely marks my bag for later manhandling

Upstairs in seat 47 I take in the relative luxury of Semi-Carma, with fold down leg rests from the seats infront, cupholders and inbus magazines. Each floor has it's own member of cabin staff, in shirt & tie, who dishes out coffee & grub. He lays down the rules in Spanish. A yankee Seattler in the seat across the bus and I laugh at our lack of understanding, but how we both picked up that only leekio's are to go in the pan, no paper or clothes. He gives the floor a quick mop and on comes 'The Final Countdown' theme on the stereo (!) then we're off. It also seems I have a free seat next to me for the entire journey. Love it.

15 minutes later we're supping on hot sweet coffee and the first of our three-star DVD selection fires up. SWAT: Colin Farrell, a hardman outsider, joins America's finest patriotic flag-wavers to stop some bad Frenchman escaping justice. Distinctly top-heavy explosions to story dross. Blah blah blah. After that it's BINGO BINGO BINGO time!! Much more exciting. Apart from being a bit slow on the uptake. Though I know 'Sesenta nueve, dude!'

Then it's dinner time and time for another mediocre movie: The Tailor of Panama, where Pierce Brosnan tries very hard not to be James Bond, but fails miserably. It should be called 'Bond pulls a scam'. We chew on breaded milanesa chicken and some tasty rooty mash, washed down by a glass of wine and slurp down a caramel cream as night sets in. My Seattle man hand me a 660 of Quilmez beer. Good lad.

Were given cushions and blankets and settle back with the final three star flick, a straight to video about Christmas, chewing gum for the eyes. The Seattle contingent opens a screwcap of Mendozan Red and we classily sup it from the bottle. He says he sleeps better on buses after a few drinks. A few? He brought a four pack of large tinnies and a bottle of wine. Lordy.

Before I know it I'm waking up with the sunrise, seeing miles of vibrant vineyards stretch off up to the base of the giant snow covered Andes lining the distance. This view, in various viney incantations, occasionally broken by a line of poplars, goes on and on for a few hours until we pull into Mendoza bus station. Right, how do I find the wine bodega tours...

It didn't quite work out like that for Mr Che. But in all our infinite wisdom, French Fred and I decide to go on a bike ride & see what Che was on about. Stocked up with a bag of tasty pastry (80% filled in novel ways with the ubiquitous, supersweet Dolcé de Leiche), some water and two strong Café Cortados we bused to the bus station to arrange respective tickets North. Fred to Chile to pick up a motorbike & rag about the Chilean Altiplano, and me to Mendoza to get some wine tasting in. I arranged my tickets IN SPANISH all on my tod! 6 our of 10 and a big smiley face for effort.

Monsieur Frederique, a Parisian Lawyer is taking a career break to let his hair (and mainly beard) grow. He looks about 15 years younger than his passport photo and smokes like a powerstation. E az ze fantaztique French accent when E speakz ze Engleesh and has a good spirit. I keep mistaking his name for Franc, so to avoid mental strain I call him French Franc.

Today we've decided to go for a bike ride in the lakes. It is possible to hire bikes in Bariloche and start there, but it's far more fun to throw logistical complications into the mix and bus to the backwoods and hope they've some bikes for rent.

We stand on the joined train & bus platform and await the no. 10 bus, for what feels LIKE A FREAKIN' ETERNITY! At least eight number 22's rumble past while we waited. It's like standing at an English busstop. While responsible Frank took watch I filled time playing like a child on the overgrown, derelict railway tracks photographing old wagons and station signs in the baking sun. It seems Argey has given up on the old railway network. The buses operate better than their airlines (ask anyone who's flown with Aerolineas Argentina) and the equivalent of a 1st class bed seat costs relatively jack. So trains have sadly gone to rust. Shame really when they put so much effort into gouging the mountains and scaling the Andes back along.

A shout from Fredfranc and we on the ten, destination Collonia Suiza, heading back through Bariloche and out the other side. Bariloche fancies itself as 'The Switzerland of Argentina'. It sports nuffty pseudo-Swiss wooden buildings, is nestled in mountains and lakes and is the chocolate fountain of Argentina. In fact it's Chocolate Month, or 'Easter' as we call it back home, a great time to be here. The shops seem to be running a 'Who-can-make-the-largest-egg-and-display-it-in-their-window' competition (some proudly display eggs the size of, er, really massive eggs). The wooden interior of one of the larger chocolate shops is disturbingly like a Church. A veritable shrine to Coco. The Inkas would heartily approve.

The Bariloche chocolate is divine too; hand-made, badboy stuff in all sorts of wacky variations. Fancy a raspberry caramel choc truffle? The best thing is that you can sample before you buy. They happily chop a piece in half to be sampled. and a shrewd shopper can leave with a nicely wrapped box and the equivalent weight of samples in their stomach. For the Swiss, who it's fair to say, do like to big up their own shit, there are imported Lindt truffles and bars sporting the purple Milka cow available also.

Anyhoos, Franked and I potter through the countryside, skirting lakes and scaling steep hills on our bus. Like all Argey bus drivers, our driver has pimped the interior of his bus, with many tasteless fur-lined mirrors, twinkling lights and tasteless and various cheesy stickers of Jesus. After a stoney road we finally alight in Colonia Suiza; a charming little place with emphasis on the little. There's a restaurant, an ice cream shop (which hand-makes mouth watering fruity sorbets), a footy pitch, possibly 6 houses and a Swiss Pub that brews its own brews and also rents bikes. And there are two left. Bikes, not brews. And they're pretty good.

The lady running the show, a laid-back and altogether welcoming pregnant thirty something blonde, lets us take the bikes without necessitating any paperwork (cos we look like trustworthy boys (WITH THESE BEARDS?! YOU SURE MOTHER??) and we're off! The games begin...

The 25km hilly lap of the lakes, called the 'Circuit Chico' (small circuit), proves a mission from the offset. I spent a good while glad we didn't brave the 'Circuit Grande'. Fred admitted early on, wheeling up a steep hill in 1st, that "I.. probably smoke... too... much" No really. A truly cosmopolitan Parisian chimney, he makes the Marlborough man look like a wuss. Perhaps a whole 1km in I realise I'm shafted and that carrying my full 6kgs of camera gear plus 2 litres of agua was possibly a mistake. For a while I fear this trip might end at a spinal injuries centre.

On the fanatically beautiful and tiring two and a half hour ride we pass a film crew making some period drama (who cheer us along like we're on the tour de France), skirt the golf course of the super spendy Hotel Lao Lao and bezz through a national park. Various viewpoints come as welcome breaks after spending a lot of time swearing at long hills. Just as much ups and downs

Towards the end, I stopped to take a photo (of a pretty view that turned out to make a crap photo) while Freddy battled on. I played catch up all the way down the dirt road back to town, but back in town was no French Bred. And the last bus for hours was leaving in 10 mins. Hmmm. It seems Fred missed the dirt road and is taking an extra 5km way round. I could go back out and check he's not taken a tumble off a cliff or is hugging the front of a bus somewhere, or I could sample this Swiss home brew...

Delectable. Weaty. A bit cheeky even. Light on the hops and ... "Oh hey Fred! What took you? 25km wasn't enough?! You've got to try this beer." We laugh as he sparks up a firetube. The bus left half an hour back, so we settle back in the sunset and savour a few beers and gratis crisps. Our cordial renter asks us if we'd like to join her, her pal, kid and knackered volvo half-way back to town to collect 'Chico' the dog from the vets. Result.

So with Mathias, an excitable unsecured (read: 'loose' or 'wild') child, between me n Fred in the back we set off. This cheeky 3 year-old kept on elbow dropping or stamping on my balls, and when he offered me a gift of leafy rubbish from the floor, I gratefully pretended to eat it. While this amused him very much, he proved difficult to stop when he started eating any leafy rubbish he could find. Kids eh?

We hop out right in front of the bus that takes us back, bid farewell to mum and the little liability destined for diarrhoea and twenty minutes later we're cleaned up in the hostel wondering if we'll ever be able to walk again. I thought my own saddle would've offered protection, but them bike saddles could've had more.

Further reinforcing the Swiss theme, Franc, Nicole (I can't help saying papa when her name is mentioned), Yankee Marla & I head (for me read 'hobble') out for Fondue! Much to Swiss Nicole's horror we shat on ancient Swiss social norms and order both a cheese and meat fondue! Heaven forbid! What colour wine to drink?? I believe we went white. Joined later by the lovely Sandra and an Argentinean amigo of hers, a cool looking dude with no English and a serious truck, we drink and eat heartily till our tongues loosen and belts follow suit.

I can see why El 'Che' would like to settle here.

Like Austria but more Chile


There was a hazily organised plan at the end of last nights mix and match drinking sesh to meet at our hostel in Puerto Varas some time to go for a walk on some nearby volcano. Although we stayed in different hostels and arrived at the volcano on two different local buses somehow we manage to all rock up in one place at roughly the same time.


Puerto Varas marks the beginning of the Chilean Lake District, and sits on the opposite end of Lago Llanquihue to Volcano Osorno. The road round the lake had a hugely Alpine meadow feel, supported by the large snowy mountain background and the old wooden pointy roofed chalet style homes and farms.

After Sandra asked directions at the police station, we lazily strolled along roads and paths, down to lake viewpoints and munching on blackberries by the side of the road. Occasionally we had to dive for cover as a dripping truck hurtled by or a car screamed down the hill leaving the smell of burning breaks.

Bored of stomping along paved roads we take a trail off through the forest and find ourselves walking across a mile wide luna lava field. The trail completely dissolved and we kind of mad the rest up, arriving back at a main road where a bus driver succeeded in charging us twice what we'd paid on the journey out, cos we were 5 minutes further drive down a tourist road.

That night we had a fantastically bilingual meal flowing with good chat, red wine and bizarre white jelly sauced steaks and super salty fish. Later we went to another place for cake and Nescafe coffee (Chile don't do real coffee). In fact, it began to dawn on all of us that a prevalent overriding theme in Chile was that a rock bottom, basically sour-faced, unfriendly customer service. Who knows if this town was representative of Chile, but the country appeared to me to be the grumpy, expensive, lanky sister of Argentina.

So the next day it was a delight to be bussing round the fantastic lake views and towering mountains en route to Argentina, destination Bariloche: A ski town set in idyllic mountain lakes with infamous chocolate, real coffee and dem bad bwai bife steaks. Two passport controls, a check-in and a shower later, and French Fred & I are sinking the Quilmez Beers and all over the steaks and Spanish chorizo omelettes. Though I won't lie, it is becoming possible to eat to much beef, irrespective of girth and calibre. Bring on the place that sells Llama steaks...

Navimagging (part iii) Pisco'd up...


Day 4:
Back in the protective pategonian fjords, under a clear sky and baking sun the vibe has improved. A swell sleep (double entendre?), a toilet that flushes again and brownies for breaky (I take 5) - what more could one want. Valerie, my long-suffering travel comrade and designated Spanish speaker, thinks she has bed sores from 3 days in bed. I feel bruised inside, but around the dining room spirits are high.


It looks like the day held up in Jurassic Park has put us about 10 hours behind schedule. For some that means a bonus, extra value cruise; for others missed flight and bus connections. While the crew help those affected reschedule, the unaffected rock up on deck and catch rays. People mill about over coffee, discussing where they've been / are heading & why the hell you'd even think to cycle the Andes. I spend a good while photographing new friends and mountains and hold a photographic Q&A for all. Folk play guitar & cards on deck and before noon the Kunstmann's out. The atmosphere couldn't be any more different to the day previous.

Faces appear that I've not seen all trip. The crew organise a game of Patgonian Bingo in the dining area. It becomes more and more rowdy down there as the bar puts the traditional Chilean Pisco Sour cocktails on special. A quid a pop, these cheeky lemony, egg-white headed badboys have that magic way of slipping down real smooth, leaving you thinking they ain't stong, when all of a sudden number 5 rips you of your dignity, balance and any control of the volume of your voice.

I join a gang of miscreants in finding a sneaky way to the prow of the boat and put away lager & Pisco Sours. Sandra, French Fred (who I took to calling French Frank) and Christoph fell particularly party to the power of pisco. A few bevvys in and I'm pretending to be Rose from Titanic. Aussy Davo, a weather beaten, wealthy miner, mumbled away in broad outback Australian. Difficult to age, well read and well smelly, even the two Aussie pilots could hardly understand the guy, but he was a legend. Sally, Charlotte and Paul, like good Brits, take on the logistics of extending the piss up on terra firma. The plan was to meet at 10pm in a bar in Puerto Varas, the next town on from Puerto Montt, where we disembark.

The sun gently dropped as Puerto Montt came into view, backed by the most archytypal, triangular Volcano a child could draw. Mount Osorno, the spitting image of Mount Fuji, sat bathed in a pinky orange glow. By the time we pull in, 14 hours late, it was dark. Fond farewells went round as people packed up and shuffled toward the cargo lift. In the hustle and bustle of disembarcation, enveloped in the oily ship smells, truck fumes and sheep shit, I somehow manage to bid Valerie a brief goodbye. It's strange splitting after travelling with someone 24/7 for a solid 6 weeks. Who the hell's gonna speak Spanish for me now?!

Nicole - that's who! Another Swiss Spanish speaker - result! We sort two taxis, pack them with packs and muchachos, wave goodbye to the Navimag and Peurto Montt (the dirty navel of Chile) and zoom off into the night. In Puerto Varas, the start of the Chilean Lake district, we all find a fart sack each and within ten minutes of the arranged meeting time, we are 9 in El Barómetro toasting Charlottes Birthday over bock beers, Pisco Sours and empenada platters. Bonza.

Navimagging (part ii) Seasickness Pills and Ills


Cresting a particularly large swell, I'm sent headfirst into the wall by my bunk and woken by a sizeable headbutt. There are nicer ways to start the day; a smoking coffee and a fresh blueberry muffin in bed perhaps. The clock says 7am and we're out in open sea again. For a good hour I bemusedly watch our room rock from side to side. Cupboards creak open and close; the sink gurgles and water bottles freely explore the floor. I already feel a bit ropey, but try to put it to the back of my mind; I'm a great advocate of mind over matter and all that jazz. There are varying methods of avoiding seasickness and I've heard mixed reports of being bedbound in a rocking room. Nautical wisdom suggests a steady horizon and taking in fresh air.

Once the roomies rouse, with varying degrees of tinto headaches, we tentatively take the stairs down for breaky. Marginally less fishy eggs, bread, ham, pineapple yoghurt and coffee. In hindsight, if you put these ingredients in a blender and you're more than halfway to making vomit.

The boat was being bullied by the sea now and folk were struggling to walk, let alone carry trays of food. I mistakenly overfilled my coffee and pour a good half me brew over me tray. Upping the ante however, to a comedic degree, was a member of staff mopping the dining area floor. Talk about adding insulting lawsuit to injury. Several slipped, recovered and maintained their dignity, but one girl straight dropped on the ol' coxics. Good timing mop man.

Breakfast is served with a sickbag, which I make into a fetching hat. It turned out that at 6am the crew went round offering seasickness pills to guests. But it seems our room was missed or we slept through. Shortly after starting my meal, we're slammed by another wave and French Juliet's grim powdered peach squash tips itself over my eggs and bread. Excellent... just peachy. I continue to eat and almost finish, when all of a sudden I'm overcome by a wave of nausea. I take my leave and step outside to take in the fresh air.


Staggering about on deck it dawns on me that I do in fact get sea sick, cos I feel terrible. It's my first time, and the sea ain't being gentle. The horizon offers no assistance whatsoever, the mouth wets, I cop my hat and moments later get to see my breakfast again, this time in Technicolor! Today was a bad day to be wearing the afghan scarf, tassels blowing everywhere, catching every fleck. Hanging over my vombag I distractedly sniff, (I can't help it, I'm a sniffer) and the aroma is surprisingly unvomitey. Probably good for those around me. There's nowt like the smell of spew to set folk off.


They say no valuable travel experience comes without a dose of hardship, and I concur. It adds colour to events. Though I couldn't escape the irony that this hardship was to be found on a hard ship. However, akin to taking a drunken drive on the porcelain bus I felt surprisingly chipper after a good hurl. So I join the bright eyed, slightly mental German named Christoph up front. Fresh air and horizon. Fresh air and horizon. Together we ride the storm and admire the impressive girth of the waves. Again they're wave systems on giant wave banks, apparently up to 6m top to bottom. We ride up one and smash down into the front of the next, sending a massive shower over the bow.


I take a few photos of the bow being battered and watch ghostly folk chunder over the portside, splashing on victims downwind looking less than amused. Less amused than I anyway. Staff rock around helpfully distributing sickbags and tending to the sick.


It's not long and the bell strikes again for round two. Me vs. Seasickness. Not only are the odds not in my favour, but the fresh sea air is flecked with the smell of vomit and the faeces of a hundred head of cattle, horse and sheep. A second bag gets filled, this time with more precision and with the scarf tucked away. Not so many solids this time. Soon I'm retching on bile, which is never fun. This time, while making torturous noises over a plaggy bag I absently wonder if cows get seasick.


Feeling less chipper this time, and more beaten up, I find a bench outside to rest my weary bones. Throwing up takes it out of you, in more ways than one. I join French-German Sandra, who's sporting the same tell-tale bloodshot eyes of a spewer. We joke that we don't remember reading about this in the promotional material. Then I duck off again for strike 3. Pulling hard on nothing I almost put my shoulder out of joint. A biley concoction somehow finds its way out of my nose, leaving me with the opposite of an air freshener up my conk.


Lunchtime. No mate. Sandra and I, dressed in everything warm we have, share a blanket in the adjacent lounge and watch crap movies. The boat continues to be knocked senseless and diners plates plunge off lipped tables to an explosive doom. I hear one of the Aussy talk about an "ugly trip to the dunny" where he found the waves have stopped the bogs flushing.


That night, after 12 hours in rough seas and tentatively putting dinner away, I decide to stay away from the sauce and take an early night. At least until I get a beer. Beer's ok. And a cup of red Carmenere from Andrew. Then surprisingly I feel fine. Gather round peeps and get the cards out. Lets play Shithead... Leeds rules.

Navimagging (part i)


Gaucho gaucho man, Johnny Callaghan, took us to his local store to purchase cheap but tasty wine. On the way he informed us with a twinkling eye, 'I'm 45, single and happy, but don't know how many kids I've got!' Interesting. Val & I stock up with four litres of red Conch Y Torro vino and a load of snacks, thank JC for his trouble and push on to check onto the Navimag.

The Navimag is a cargo ship that sails up and down the Chilean coast from Puerto Natales to Puerto Montt. Back in the 80s & 90s adventurous travellers used to backhand shiphands to stow away on cargo ships up the beautiful uninhabited Fjords. The company Navimag entrepreneurially saw an opportunity and created various pokey passenger cabins (sleeping approx. 300) and offered tourists expensive 4 day 'cruise' options up a maze of channels (sometimes only 80m wide), past snowy peaks, waterfalls and heaving glaciers.

We checked in, dropped our bags, left the crew to load the big old ship with livestock and trucks and wandered back into town to kill a few hours. In a bookshop café I perused various Pategonian photo books (look up the work of Pablo Valenzuela Vaillant, for he be bo) and (on my freshly movified gadget) watched my very first episode of the Mighty Boosh and the 1st of 24 season 6! Damn it, if Jack Bauer ain't the coolest man alive I dunno who is!

Aboard the Navimag vessel my first impression as we're herded onto a greasy hydraulic lift in the main hold is that this really is a cargo ship, and it smells of cow. Orange clad crew help us find our cabins. Our bags are on our respective beds and fortunately the 1.5 litre bottles of red are in one piece and haven't tie died my clothes. Due to unavailability in the steerage 12 berth 'D' dorm, we're in a pimped 4-berth A-class room (US$420 per bunk instead of $355).

It's still a shoebox of a room, clearly not designed for four grown ups to move in at any one time, but room 108 is home for 4 nights. Along with Swiss Valerie, we're joined by English Nick (a London photograph fan with a quality camera and almost see-through hair) and French Juliet (oo az ze outraaaageously Fwench accent to go wizz eat, but doesn't really like chocolate, wine or cheese!). We unload our alcohol and see we're on the same page, with stacks of biscuits, crisps and a shed-load of red. We fill a cupboard with booze and at the safety video in the common room we smile at one another when it suggests 'Not to consume alcohol to excess'. The video also says 'Sitting on the board is very dangerous'. Not a clue what that means, so I might spend four days standing just in case.

After the meeting on goes the movie 'The Motorcycle Diaries' about the local South American hero, Che Guevara. Over the course of the journey they play 'apt' films. 'March of the Penguins' (Antarctic), '8 Below' (rubbish snowy dog film) and 'Pirates of the Caribbean 2' (sea theme). I was surprised when they didn't play 'Titanic' or 'The Poisidon adventure'. Though instead of laugh at 'El Che' fall of his bike, as I'd done before, I unsociably slipped back to the cabin for my 24 hit...

We wake up to an excellent sunrise and take the breakfast buffet at 8am. Dining in shifts, by room number groups reduces the pressure of 300 gannets hoping to get their 400 dollars worth of passable food. After the fishy scrambled egg breaky the ship shows off it's super manoeuvrable 'manual automatic' steering system (oxymoron much?) to navigate through tiny passes. Having loads of thrusters all round the boat means it can even drive sideways. We're all allowed onto the bridge at any time to watch el capetan do his thang, cruising round the misty fjords.

Later on we pass a bizarre shipwreck that looks like a ghost ship. Apparently, the story is thus: The captain of Greek ship 'Coto Baxi', loaded with a cargo of sugar bound for Chile, decided to pull an insurance job on his boat. So he sold his sugar early in Uruguay and when he hit the Chilean Fjords he deliberately ran aground to sink it. In doing so he destroyed his ship, but accidentally parked it on an underwater shelf, so it wouldn't sink. Insurance came to have a looksy and got suspicious when there was no sugar, so he ended up going to jail for 3 years. Denied! Now, 18 years later, his ship has become an important lighthouse warning other ships not to park there. Being open to the elements all that time it's rusted to hell, it's full of holes and the turret has fallen forward, but yet it sits above the waves and looks like it's moving. Very bizarre.

Lunch at noon. Food on top of food, with no real exercise in between to promote digestion (hours of 24, exciting as it is, doesn't count). We pass a mammoth glacier, one of the visible tongues of the hidden and unimaginably vast Southern Pategonian Ice Field. The spitting rain, cold temperatures and grey cloud all felt terribly English, wot. Jolly shame I didn't bring my brolly. Bad form.

The 'informative seasickness meeting' in the common area was informative. We were warmed that round fourteen hundred hours we leave the protective fjords and spend the rest of the day cutting round the Golfo de peñas mainland, through open Pacific where waves range between 2 and 6m high. All are offered complimentary seasickness pills and advised not to lean against windows, not to look at the floor too long, and to move slowly slowly. If things get real bad we're advised to take up the foetal position on the floor 'like you was when borned'.

I've never been seasick in my life and I ain't takin no medicine. I'm like a child on a rocky boat. I tend to get over excitable and run about. So come 2pm when we literally hit the open sea (or it hit us) I shuffled up to the front and rode the bow with a bright eyed German named Christoph. The waves were indeed massive, more like a bank of smaller waves piled onto moving hills of water. The massive ship was pitched and dropped over these, causing the front to smash down into the sea sending a shower skyward.

As much fun as I was having, I won't lie that it came somewhat as a relief when we were informed that we had to turn back and find shelter in a natural harbour and wait for the bad weather to pass. The natural harbour we eventually anchored looked like something off Jurassic Park. A beautiful misty inlet surrounded by waterfalls and fading blue grey mountains. A smiling Brit couple and I decide to try and spread bogus rumours that we overheard the captain saying we'd probably have to stay here a week, and we'd run out of food well before then. But it was difficult to keep a straight face.

After the sun had fallen, 24 all watched and dinner put away, the red wines and cards came out. Aussy 'Asshole', Brit 'Wist' and Argey 'Mau Mau' were the games of choice. The local beer for sale at the bar, 'Kunstmann' caused much tittering. For example, 'I love the Kunst Man' was heard more than once.
